Mòinteach Raineach, or Rannoch Moor, is a triangular area. Stood on its apex, about 10 miles across its base and about 10 miles from top to bottom for a total of around 50 square miles (130 km²) of boggy moorland It is a desolate expanse uninhabited and uninhabitable peat bogs, lochs, heather hillocks, strewn lumps of granite and a few gnarled Caledonian pines, all of it over one thousand feet above sea level. 'A wearier looking desert a man never saw' -- author Robert Louis Stevenson on Rannoch Moor
